STARTup Live Vienna Review: 54 hours and a Boxee.tv prototype later

As announced earlier PLAY.FM participated in the STARTup Live Vienna Session #3 at the Microsoft Headquarters in Vienna from June 11 to 13.

27 people out of an inspiring group of 100 entrepreneurs, developers, designers and self-proclaimed start-up enthusiasts from different backgrounds presented their business ideas in crisp 90 seconds pitches. Gosh! So many ideas!

Our idea? On Sunday people should be able to listen to PLAY.FM DJ mixes on their HD-TV sets. How we wanted to achieve that? Build an application for Boxee.tv, an open source HD-TV media center with a social twist plus allowing apps similar to the iPhone. Impossible? Amazingly, four brave guys, Chris, Tom, Siegi and Viktor joined PLAY.FM for a weekend and made the idea come true:

Do you find the PLAY.FM App?

Windows were covered with concepts on flip chart paper. Soon designs were drawn and first attempts at walking with the the PLAY.FM API turned out to be successful. Only the notorious sausage-dinner breaks could the team stop from working overnights.

On Sunday 6 pm people’s jaws dropped when Viktor pressed the prototype’s button and music from PLAY.FM was streamed live on the Boxee.tv app!

For those who already actively use Boxee.tv on their TV Sets will confirm that the software is pretty amazing and even is fun when installed on a computer. Hopefully the PLAY.FM Boxee.tv app will soon be available to everyone. A few kinks still have to be ironed out but we are getting there…

Thanks to everybody involved for making this idea real!
